Old Metal, New Thread (2024)

$185.00

I carry a fragment of older metal at my center. Long before I existed, that metal circle belonged to another necklace, another place, another pair of hands.

A red glass center glows beneath a blue crescent. The shape forms a quiet eye that looks outward and inward at the same time.

Around that metal circle, sari silk was stitched by hand. Fiber gathered around metal until the two materials held each other in balance.

Hemp cord carries me. Knots hold the path together. Along the way travel Venetian glass, African trade beads, and carved bone.

I rest over the heart where instinct lives. Old metal continues its journey. New thread carries the story forward.

_______________________________________________________

I created Old Metal, New Thread using reclaimed jewelry, sari silk fiber, and macrame hemp cord.

At the center of the necklace is a recycled tribal pendant containing a red and blue glass cabochon. The pendant likely originated from Central or South Asian jewelry traditions. I chose to preserve the original metal structure and build the necklace around it.

The pendant is surrounded with hand stitched recycled sari silk, creating a circular fiber halo that softens the metal and anchors the piece in textile tradition.

The necklace cord is macrame hemp. Along the cord I incorporated a Venetian glass bead, African trade beads, and carved bone skull beads. Each element carries its own material history and cultural lineage.

This piece belongs to my Third Eye Series of 2024, a body of work exploring intuition, symbolic vision, and protective forms. The necklace is designed so the pendant rests directly over the heart as a talisman.

Symbolism

The circular pendant reflects the ancient symbol of the protective eye.

The red glass center carries associations with vitality, life force, and the human heart. The blue crescent suggests awareness and intuitive sight.

The sari silk halo represents textile memory. Fiber holds the metal in place while also symbolizing continuity and repair.

The necklace cord gathers materials from different traditions. Venetian glass, African trade beads, bone carving, and reclaimed metal meet along a single path of hemp fiber.

Placed over the heart, the pendant becomes a symbolic eye watching over the emotional center of the body.
