Batu Khan is a one-of-a-kind handwoven and freeform crochet headpiece created in 2026 as part of my ongoing wool alchemy practice. This work is inspired by the dual legacy of Batu Khan, a figure remembered as both a formidable war leader and a strategic, benevolent ruler.
Early nomadic cultures relied on wool not only for clothing and shelter, but for ritual, symbolism, and protection. This headpiece draws from that lineage. The colorful woven interior represents vitality, ancestry, and human presence. The exterior lattice cage, built through freeform crochet using cotton and hand-dyed wool, forms a protective structure reminiscent of armor, resilience, and leadership. The faux fur brim grounds the piece, offering warmth and marking the boundary between the body and the world.
Batu Khan embodies strength tempered by responsibility. Power held with intention. Protection without cruelty.
