This felted wool hat is part of my Broken Heart Series, a collection created during my journey through grief after losing both my son and my mother. The natural white wool used in this piece felted into an unexpected ridged texture — almost like bandaging — which aligned perfectly with the emotional landscape the hat represents.
The heart and its radiating black cracks were not painted or added afterward. Every element was wet-felted directly into the wool, created from dyed loose fiber layered intentionally into place. The result is a single, sculptural form: a 2-inch brim, a 5.5-inch dome, and a soft-yet-structured four-layer crown that maintains its shape while remaining comfortable.
The concept behind this design is simple and honest: grief fractures the mind. In the years since my losses, I have often felt disoriented, hyper-aware, and unsure of what reality to trust. Yet healing has arrived in unexpected ways — through the kindness of strangers, the gentleness of community, and moments of humanity that cracked the darkness open again. This hat symbolizes that journey from brokenness to cautious hope, carrying both story and strength.
