Bearing Witness is a hand-felted wool hat created as both garment and moral object. The eye, a symbol that appears repeatedly throughout my work, represents the lifelong search for truth — a pursuit that requires open eyes and an open heart.
In a culture that encourages emotional avoidance, we are often taught that pain must be silenced rather than understood. I believe the opposite. Transformation comes from allowing ourselves to feel sorrow, grief, and heartbreak — and realizing that we are strong enough to carry them without losing our kindness.
The crosses on the crown represent the understanding that truth is spiritual, not material. It is something we experience and embody, not something we own or control.
This piece is an invitation to stay awake, to remain compassionate, and to choose presence over numbing — even when it is difficult.
