Freeform Crochet

My life as a professional artist began with freeform crochet hats.

I started making them after my son died, while my mom was sick. At that time, I crocheted so that I would survive. It was what kept me upright.

That practice eventually led me to other techniques, and for the past eighteen months, my focus has been on wool felting. This is the first crochet hat I’ve made in almost two years.

It is different.

Before, I crocheted to endure. Now, I approach the work with strength and confidence.

The background of this piece is woven. The fuzzy brim and structural foreground are crocheted. It carries the weight and presence of something protective. It reminds me of a Mongolian war helmet.

It is not on my website yet. I still need to name it, photograph and write its story. However, I am very happy with it. I decided to share it today.
